Making Tobacco Pipe at Home

Although we want to make pipes manually for hobby purposes, machinery and equipment are still needed for

this.

Especially the lathe for the tobacco chamber and the air duct, the hand motor for the rough work, the sanding,

the paint and the polish are the first materials that come to mind.

There are a few more ways to start making pipes as an amateur.

If you do not have a lathe or similar heavy machine, there are ready-made briar blocks with a tobacco chamber

and air duct in the form of a pipe-made starter kit. By choosing these, we can immediately start finer

craftsmanship and shape the pipe of our dreams.

If we want to do all the steps ourselves, after completing the necessary equipment, the most important step

between us and the pipe in our dreams is to determine the shape of the pipe and find the appropriate tree for

it.

Pipe shapes are generally divided into 4 different categories as straight pipes, curved pipes, flat pipes and

natural patterned pipes.

After deciding on one of these shapes, we have to decide on the size of the pipe, we should choose the pipe

tree according to the size of the pipe we will make, small, medium, large and extra large.

Choosing a pipe tree that is much larger than the pipe we will make will prolong the time we will spend,

and choosing a very small size will decrease the defect tolerance against the stains that may appear

on the pipe tree.

Finally, it remains to choose the quality of the pipe tree, it should not be forgotten that since the pipe

tree is a wood that grows under the ground and does not have a transparent structure, there is the

possibility of stains, stones, holes, rottennesses on every pipe tree.

However, quality classification according to the experience of the masters during pipe tree cutting

reduces this possibility considerably.

The first quality in pipe tree is the tree quality with the lowest probability of stain.

If you want to make a plain patterned pipe without paint, varnish, or sandblast, and if you attach great

importance to small details, you can choose this quality.

There is a possibility of stains on 2nd quality trees. You can choose according to the shape and

pattern of your pipe.

You can prefer painted, varnished, sandblasted, patterned pipes because of the higher probability of

staining on 3rd quality trees.

After choosing the pipe tree, drawing the pipe shape in our dreams on the sketch will prevent incorrect

start.

According to the drawing, first piercing the tobacco chamber and then opening the air duct according

to it is the first thing to do, then you can do the rough work with a lathe or hand motor and make the

pipe ready for sanding.

Afterwards, you can continue to fine work until we reach the form we want with the help of thick to fine

sandpaper.

In the last stage, by attaching an acrylic or ebonite pipe handle suitable for the pipe, you will complete

the fine work by bringing the dimensions of this handle to the same level as the pipe tree.

Optionally, you can color with alcohol-based paint.

In the final stage, you can use wax for a smoother and brighter appearance.

PIPO USAGE

We recommend that you start by filling the tobacco chamber 1/3 for the first use.

After the tobacco reservoir starts to attach soot, it is beneficial to increase the tobacco occupancy

rate gradually, as the possibility of the fire damaging the tree will decrease.
